Composite Fillings

Procedure Description

Composite fillings, also known as tooth-colored or white fillings, are a modern restorative solution for treating cavities and repairing minor tooth damage. Unlike traditional silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings are made from a mixture of plastic resin and finely ground glass particles that closely match the natural color of your teeth. The procedure involves removing the decayed portion of the tooth, cleaning the area, and then applying the composite material in layers. Each layer is cured (hardened) with a special LED light before the next layer is applied. Once complete, the filling is shaped and polished to match the contours of your natural tooth. Most composite filling procedures take 30-60 minutes and are completed in a single visit.

Bonded Composite Fillings

Indications

Composite fillings are recommended for patients who need cavity treatment or minor tooth repair while maintaining natural aesthetics:

When to Consider Composite Fillings

Dental Cavities

Small to medium-sized cavities caused by tooth decay, particularly in visible areas of the mouth where aesthetics matter.

Replacing Old Metal Fillings

Upgrading existing silver amalgam fillings to tooth-colored alternatives for improved aesthetics and reduced mercury concerns.

Closing Small Gaps

Filling minor gaps between teeth to improve appearance and prevent food accumulation.

Root Surface Decay

Treating cavities on exposed root surfaces where composite's bonding properties provide excellent results.

Note: For larger cavities or teeth with extensive damage, a dental crown or inlay/onlay may provide better long-term durability and protection.

Benefits

Why Choose Composite Fillings?

Natural Appearance

Composite resin is color-matched to your natural teeth, making the filling virtually invisible in your smile.

Mercury-Free

Unlike silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings contain no mercury, providing a biocompatible and safe restoration.

Conservative Tooth Preparation

Less healthy tooth structure needs to be removed compared to amalgam fillings, preserving more of your natural tooth.

Single Visit Treatment

Most composite fillings are completed in one appointment, unlike some other restoration types.

Alternatives

Silver Amalgam Fillings

Traditional metal fillings that are highly durable but visible and contain mercury

Porcelain Inlays/Onlays

Lab-fabricated ceramic restorations for larger cavities requiring more durability

Dental Crowns

Full tooth coverage for teeth with extensive decay or damage beyond what a filling can restore
